The Charioteer

Lord Krishna was the king of Dwarka, a city in India, about 5,000 years ago. He was the cousin of the Pandavs and the Kauravs who fought in the battle of Mahabharata. Though Lord Krishna was on the side of the Pandavs, He did not fight in the battle. He participated in the battle as Arjun’s charioteer. Arjun was one of the Pandav brothers and a close friend of Lord Krishna.

Bhagavad Gita contains the message of Lord Krishna that He gave to Arjun before commencement of the battle of Mahabharata. Lord Krishna was born in a prison in Mathura where his parents had been imprisoned by the king Kansa, who feared death at the hands of their eighth child. Upon his birth on a dark stormy night, the chains binding his parents fell apart, the lock of the prison door sprang open and all the guards became unconscious. His father carried the newborn in a wicker basket to the safety of the home of a close friend. That very night the friend’s wife had given birth to a girl. Persuaded by his friend, Krishna’s father brought back the girl to the prison and she was killed the next day by the king who assumed her to be the eighth child of the couple. The story of Lord Krishna thus started in a miraculous way. It demonstrates the miraculous power in the wisdom of Lord Krishna that He gave to the world in the form of the Bhagavad Gita.

The stories of Krishna’s life are known the world over. These include His many acts of mischief; the lifting of a mountain to save the village folks from the fury of the rain god; the killing of many demons and Kansa, the mighty king of Mathura and, of course, the unfettered love of the Gopis for Him. The world knows him for bringing back to life the son of his Guru and for his role in the battle of the Mahabharata and the ensuing victory of the Pandavs. We also know Him for the teachings He gave to Arjun in the form of the Bhagavad Gita before the commencement of the battle. Here, he was the divine charioteer who shared His wisdom with Arjun.

We regard Lord Krishna as a God or a prophet/ avatar. We revel in His divine games; we visit the holy places associated with His life. But what the world does not know is that the knowledge and wisdom given by Him in the form of the Gita, more particularly the wisdom of Buddhi Yog and Karma Yog, is the sovereign secret or a science whose objective is to free all human beings from sorrow, old age and death and make them supreme imperishable beings. The message of Lord Krishna is unlike the worldly teachings of do’s and don’ts or of morality codes and conduct. The message of Lord Krishna constitutes highest wisdom that can free all human beings from sorrow, ageing and death, irrespective of the actions they may be performing in their lives.

But who really lived in the body that is known as Lord Krishna? Who actually narrated the teachings of the Gita to Arjun? Who actually proclaimed the wisdom of Buddhi Yog and Karma Yog to the world?

After imparting the science of Yog to Arjun, Lord Krishna told him in Verses 4:1 to 3 that He had taught this Yog to Vivasvat, the Sun God, in the beginning of time. Vivasvat then imparted the Yog to Manu, the progenitor of mankind and Manu told it to Ikshvaku, the first king of the solar dynasty. The Yog was thus revealed and was known to the royal sages before it was lost to the world. While imparting the Yog to Arjun, Lord Krishna revealed that He was the supreme being who had taken birth by His own will.

Though all the beings are fragments of the all-pervading wisdom, Lord Krishna was the all-pervading supreme wisdom Himself. The difference between Him and other Beings is that whereas we do not have the self-realisation, the supreme being knows that He and all other beings are same or God. The all-pervading wisdom knows that all bodies are His and all beings are His eternal and indestructible fragments. Lord Krishna knew that beings are deluded by the ego and do not have the self-knowledge that they are God/ indestructible beings. He knew that by following the path of Yog imparted by Him to the Sun God, we can free ourselves from the delusion caused by the ego, gain self-realisation, free ourselves from sorrow and old age and become immortal.

Lord Krishna was not the body but the wisdom or God dwelling in the body. Whenever He used the words ‘I’ and ‘Me’ in the Gita, He was referring to the wisdom that He was and which He imparted to Arjun We are united to Him, not when we meditate on His name or form, but when we fix our mind and intellect on His wisdom. It is only then, that we become one with Him. It is only then that we understand that the divine charioteer, Lord Krishna, through His words and wisdom, can lead us to immortality. It is then, that we realise that the message of Lord Krishna to the world in the form of Bhagavad Gita is the highest wisdom that can transform us perishables human beings in to Supreme Beings.
